Standing nearly a yard high at the shoulder, the Wolfhound is not only the tallest of all the hounds, but is the biggest breed of them all. In spite of his size, he is one of the most gentle of dogs, with an expression which combines pride and calm, but which can occasionally light up with genial mischief as his dark eyes flash.
Everything about the Wolfhound is large, but one of his greatest attributes is his perfect balance, his rough, harsh coat fitting his image perfectly. The Wolfhound never appears to hurry, but he can cover a lot of ground and obviously is a dog which needs space and reasonable exercise.
He also needs food in fair quantity, especially in his growing years, when his rapid increase in size requires attention to a high calibre diet if his huge frame is to be properly developed. A delightful dog but not to be taken on lightly. Sadly few of them live to be more than ten.
Italian Greyhound
An elegant and slender dog, looking like a standard greyhound but in miniature and with much finer bone. The coat is smooth and glossy and can come in a variety of shades. The head is narrow with a very fine muzzle and ears are softly folded and set high on the head. The spine slopes gently and there is a defined tuck up in the loins. The gait is high stepping and free. This can be a very fast dog when it is so inclined. An intelligent breed, but can be stubborn and wilful. They can be difficult to housetrain and, due to their hound instincts, can be difficult to train to recall. It is believed that the Italian Greyhound originated in Egypt; in fact mummified dogs very similar to today's breed have been found in the tombs of the Pharoahs. The Italian Greyhound was brought by the Romans to the Mediterranean area in the 6th century B.C. where it became a favourite of Greek and Roman nobility. It reached the height of its popularity in the 16th and 17th century where it adorned many courts. Among the famous owners you can find Mary Queen of Scots, Charles I, Frederick the Great and Queen Victoria. Great painters also found time for these little dogs as it was painted by Blake, Carpacio and Van Dyck. The Italian Greyhound may have been used to hunt rabbits but it is also the first dog bred primarily for companionship. (Pet Planet)
Yorkshire Terriers
The Yorkshire Terrier is a small dog of Terrier type, developed in the 1800s in the historical area of Yorkshire. Nicknamed Yorkies and part of the Toy Group, they are characterised by their small size and silky blue and tan coat.
Yorkies don’t need a lot of food and are easy to overfeed.
Obesity is very serious for a small dog can lead to diseases such as diabetes and joint problems. A small, sturdy breed, Yorkies are best known for their full flowing hair with a quality similar to humans.
ScottishTerriers
Despite their small size, Scotties give the impression of being strong and powerful dogs. They have a hard and wire-haired outer coat with a soft dense undercoat and prominent eyebrows and moustaches.
Scotties are surprisingly agile and active, moving with a smooth, level gait. They think they are large dogs and have the boldness and courage to match. To outsiders Scotties appear somewhat glum and serious but to their family and friends they are affectionate and cheerful. Children must be taught that these dogs are not toys and to give them the respect they deserve. They will get along well with other household animals. Scotties, for all their loyalties to their owners, are independent dogs and can, therefore, be quite difficult to obedience and house train. Training needs to based on mutual respect
Japanese Akita Inu
The Japanese Akita Inu was separated from the Akita in the UK in 2006, following the division of the two breeds in most other countries, and is probably closer to the original type of dog bred in Japan than the Akita, which owes some of its development to the United States. The Japanese Akita Inu is not as heavy or substantial, and is more oriental in expression. Colour is also an important difference. Whilst the Akita can be any colour, the Japanese Akita Inu has only four recognised colours and the standard is very specific about the permitted “Urajuro” markings. Although very loyal and faithful to his family, the Japanese Akita Inu is not the dog for every home, and is perhaps not the breed for the first time owner. The breed is a part of the Utility breeds group and is very independent in character and can be stubborn and is not particularly social with other dogs, the males tending to be dominant. However, they are extremely clean, love their immediate family and, if trained correctly, will respond and learn quickly. When fully mature, they will accept as little or as much exercise as you care to give them.
Japanese Chin
The Japanese Chin, also called the Chin or Japanese Spaniel, is a small dog with a large broad head, large wide-set eyes, and a short broad muzzle. The ears are small, V-shaped, wide apart, set slightly below the crown of the skull, and well covered with hair. The Japanese Chin is loving, intelligent and extremely devoted to its master. This breed loves everyone it is familiar with, but is known to be reserved around strangers and in unfamiliar situations. They are good with other dogs and pets. The Japanese Chin has a mind of its own and likes to be the centre of attention. History tells us that he originated in China and made his way to Japan as a gift from the Empress of one country to the Empress of the other. (Kennel Club)
